What You'll Like:

  • The Makobe River is one of the small and wild whitewater rivers that flow from the headwaters contained in Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Provincial Park.
  • In the high-water levels of spring and early summer, many of the numerous rapids may be run as Class I and ll rapids by skilled whitewater paddlers. Always scout rapids before running them. During summer, the route consists of flatwater with some moving water, lining, and numerous portages around rapids that are no longer runnable in low water.
  • The Makobe River has cut a series of narrow canyons through the Canadian Shield bedrock as it flows northward from the height of land to the Montreal River.
  • Temagami’s backcountry parks provide a remote wilderness experience, protect over 100,000ha, and provide roughly 600km of interconnected canoe routes.
  • Located in the heart of the Temagami region, Makobe River is connected to a 2400km canoeing network consisting of Parks, Conservation Reserves, and Crown lands.
  • The region’s canoe routes traverse some of the most rugged landscapes in Northern Ontario – 4 of the province’s highest peaks are in Temagami’s backcountry parks.
  • The area’s rich Indigenous heritage dates back at least 10,000 years, and canoeists travel on ancient portages or “nastawgan”.
